Urban Farming for Village Food Security: Utilizing Land Beneath Electricity Transmission Lines

Abstract


Food security requires approaches that improve resource efficiency while generating environmental, economic, and social benefits. This study examines how community-based urban e-farming applies circular economy principles to utilize underused land beneath electricity transmission lines and support local food security. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through observation, interviews, and document analysis, with outcomes assessed using the Sustainability Compass framework. The findings show that 4,340 m² of previously underutilized land was transformed into an integrated circular production system comprising organic farming, freshwater aquaculture, fishery-based MSMEs, and a waste bank. The program generated multidimensional outcomes across the four Sustainability Compass dimensions: Nature through waste recovery and productive land utilization; Economy through income-generating activities and production-cost savings; Well-being through improved access to locally produced food and the direct engagement of 33 community members; and Social outcomes through institutional strengthening and community resilience. Integrating circular economy principles into community-based urban farming can transform underutilized land into productive assets and strengthen local food security.
